Baron Louis Albert Bacler D'Albe: Carte Generale Du Theatre de la Guerre en Italie et dans les Alpe

Rome: Bacler d´Albe, 1792 scope: 30 works – overall dimensions: Height 318 cm (6 works x 53 cm), width 340 cm (5 works x 68 cm). Dimension of individual sheets 53 x 68 cm (Zí)

This is a collection of 31 maps of Baron Bacler (1761-1824), the first detailed maps of Northern and Central Italy which the Baron created during the campaign with Napoleon. In April 1794 Bacler joined the Italian army as an artillery captain. Soon after Bacler joined the army, Bonaparte noted his creative talent, keenly appreciated it and made Bacler his chief army geographer and official draftsman while at the same time tasking the painter with popularizing French victories. Bacler performed both roles admirably and his entire life’s work can likewise be divided into two quite distinct areas, the military and fine art. Like many artists, Bacler was enchanted with Italy and found time to capture the beauty of the Italian landscape and cities. In 1797, Bonaparte temporarily left him in Italy as chief military mapmaker of the Cisalpine Republic.
